Photoshop Tutorials: Create A Rusted Iron Chain.

Hi friends, back with another tutorial. Here in this this tutorials I will show you how to create a realistic rusted chain. Creating a 3d object in Photoshop is always fun, just with a use of few filters you can create an awesome 3d object in photoshop. OK now lets move on to the tutorial.

STEP-1   Open a new document  with width and height of 600px.

STEP-2   Apply the gradient overlay layer style.

STEP-3   Pick the rounded rectangle tool with 10 cm radius, and draw a shape as you see below.

STEP-4   Again using the same rounded rectangle tool, select the vectormask thumbnail of this layer, at the top of the menu tab select the option subtract from shape area, after selecting it, cut of the center part of the shape. See the image below.

STEP-5   Double click on this layer to bring in the layer style window and apply the following layer style values. Here I have used Bevel and Emboss and Gradient Overlay .

STEP-6   Now using the rounded rectangle tool again draw a shape as you see below. Once done copy the layer style values of the earlier shape by right clicking upon the layer and select the option copy layer style. Once after copying the layer style, select the present layer and paste it again by right clicking upon the layer and selecting the option paste layer style.

STEP-7   Now using these two layer, create a  object like that of a linking chain. See the image below.

STEP-8   Now select all the layers excluding the gradient layer below. Group it by pressing CTRL+G. Once you have grouped the layers, right click upon this grouped layer, select the option duplicate group and press ok.

STEP-9   Now hide the original grouped layer. Select the duplicate grouped layer and press CTRL+E, this will flatten the group to one layer and name this layer as ‘CHAIN’.

STEP-10   Press CTRL+T to bring in the transform tool, right click upon it and select the option WARP, and tranform it accordingly. See the image below.

STEP-11   Now duplicate the chain layer by pressing CTRL+J, select the chain layer, and place it above the duplicate layer, name this duplicate layer as ‘SHADOW’ now CTRL+click upon this shadow layer and fill this layer with the color black. Now move this layer a bit down so that the shadow can be visible.

STEP-12   Still on the same layer, go to filter menu>Blur>GaussianBlur and set the radius amount to 1 px.

STEP-13   Now select the chain layer,  duplicate it again, by pressing CTRL+J, name this layer as ‘REFLECTION’ and place this layer below the shadow layer. Move it a bit down, set the opacity of this layer to 60%.

This is how the image will look.

STEP-14   Now select these three layers, i.e., CHAIN, SHADOW and the REFLECTION layers and group it. Duplicate this grouped layer. Hide the original group layer. Press CTRL+E to flatten the layers. Name this layer as ‘RUST’.

STEP-15   Now download any rust texture from net need not be specific. Open and place it at the top of the RUST layer.

STEP-16    Still on the texture layer, CTRL+click on the RUST layer, this will select the pixels of the layer, copy and paste the pixels and hide the texture layer. New layer with texture will appear at the top, set the blending mode this layer to MULTIPLY.

This is the final preview of the image.

Done. That’s it we have completed the tutorial. That was an easy tut and realistic too.  Will be back with another tut. Enjoy.
